What causes the crackling noise that comes through speakers in movie theaters?

Whenever I go to see a movie, once or twice during the film, a crackling noise like somebody crumpling a paper bag comes through the speakers. It's not necessarily loud, but it's definitely audible. Any explanation for this occurrence?
