Is it bad to put rubbing alcohol on canker sores?

can you put rubbing alcohol on them i have tried everything. my dentist gave me stuff a few years back to put on before i went to bed and they were gone the next day! i forgot what it was called but i remember reading that it had like 70% alcohol in it.
