How can i help a cut or canker sore on my gums heal or stop hurting?

i have braces, when i went to the orthodonist about a week ago they tried to put in this thick curving wire. the wire went down into the lower part of my gums where your jaw meets your skin and pulled tightly and caused a lot of pain. Of course, once they got the wire in they decided not to use it and took it right out. Now in the crevice of my gum i have a circle cut or sore. It looks a lot like a hole in my gum. Im not sure if its a cut or canker sore, but it hurt to fully open my mouth, eat, and smile..how can i make it heal and stop hurting?
